One of the best moments in nursery happens when someone from a child`s family brings a piece of their world into our classroom. β¨
This week, Amelia, mum to one of our children and a dentist, came in to chat with the children about looking after their teeth. She brought a game, a children`s uniform to try on and use in our role play area, and goodie bags to take home.
What stood out wasn`t just the excitement (though there was plenty of that). It was watching children realise that the grown-ups they know have skills and knowledge to share. Amelia showed them what a dentist does, answered their questions, and made dental care feel like something interesting rather than something to worry about.
These moments matter. When children see their families valued in the nursery, they feel proud. When they learn from people they trust, it sticks. And when they try on a uniform and imagine themselves as a dentist one day, well, that`s confidence and curiosity growing right there.
Thank you, Amelia, for giving your time and your expertise. πΏ
At Hawthorn House, we know that reading together is one of the most powerful things we do. When children snuggle up with a favourite book, listen to a familiar story, or ask to hear it again and again, they`re building so much more than just vocabulary.
Stories help children feel safe and confident. They learn new words naturally. They see themselves in characters. And they have those close, quiet moments with an adult who`s fully there.which is where real connection happens.
Through our Love of Reading programme, we`re nurturing a genuine love for books. In preschool, children go further, they act out stories, remember what happened, and bring them to life through play. This helps cement learning, builds memory and language, and gives children confidence to express themselves.
Because when children grow up surrounded by stories, they develop curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning that stays with them. β¨
Harvest Season at Hawthorn House β¨
Over the last two weeks we`ve been exploring autumn through play. Painting with natural materials, sinking hands into sensory bags, creating with leaves and textures, it might look like fun (and it absolutely is), but something important is happening underneath.
Our youngest children are building confidence through touch and texture. They`re discovering what things feel like, learning new words as they play, and strengthening the small muscles in their hands that will eventually help them write. For children still settling in, sensory experiences like these create safe, joyful moments that help them feel at home.
Meanwhile, our older children are stretching their creativity, solving problems as they build and stick and paint, and joining in harvest traditions that connect them to nature and seasons. And everyone β from the babies to our pre-schoolers β is part of something together.
Harvest isn`t just about the activity. It`s about children discovering textures, building language, growing in confidence, and feeling part of a community that celebrates the seasons. π§‘
At Hawthorn House, learning is alive in every moment. πΏ
When our preschool children made cleaning spray from orange peel, they weren`t just creating something useful, they were -
π Scientists observing change
π« Mathematicians measuring and diluting
π― Problem-solvers working towards a goal.
They watched, tested, adjusted. They discovered that sustainability isn`t something abstract; it`s something they can do, right now, with their own hands.
That`s the kind of thinking we nurture at Hawthorn House. Real learning. Real impact. β¨
Children thrive when the same caring adults are there, day after day, year after year. β¨
At Hawthorn House, our team demonstrates genuine commitment and longevity. Staff build genuine relationships with children and families over time, they develop comprehensive knowledge of each child`s individual needs and personality, they become trusted figures in their lives. That continuity matters profoundly. A child knows their key person will be there. They know how things work. They feel secure.
And our team is highly qualified. These are practitioners who understand child development deeply, who can read what a child needs in a moment, who know how to scaffold learning and build on what each individual child is ready for next. Their expertise sits quietly behind every interaction, it`s not showy, it`s just genuinely thoughtful care.
The environment reflects that same warmth and intentionality. Nothing feels rushed or corporate. Children are nurtured, noticed and celebrated. They`re building real friendships in a place that feels calm and genuinely caring.
We`re a big part of our local community too, those links mean children experience the wider world beyond our doors. And our outdoor space is where children play freely, explore nature, and develop the physical confidence that matters so much in these early years.
When expertise meets continuity meets genuine warmth, that`s where children flourish.

Our team at Hawthorn House is experienced, skilled, and deeply connected to every child in our care. β¨
When children are cared for by staff who truly know them, something shifts. They feel safe to try new things, test their ideas, and discover what they`re capable of. Our preschool have been exploring hand and eye coordination through creative ball mazes they`d made from recycled resources alongside their friends. Simple materials, but the learning happening? Real problem-solving, persistence, and confidence in action.
This is what happens when children have space to experiment, and staff who`ve worked together long enough to notice the small things that matter most. πΏ
Don`t just take our word for it..
This is what Ofsted sees at Hawthorn House β¨
Our last Ofsted inspection highlighted what makes us different.. how our staff nurture strong relationships with families to ensure a shared approach to children`s learning. πΏ
We don`t see parents and staff as separate. We`re a team, working together around each child. That partnership means families understand what their child is learning, why it matters, and how they can support it at home.
Our curriculum is engaging and purposeful, filled with opportunities that spark curiosity and build capability. When children are genuinely engaged, something shifts, they become motivated to learn, and that motivation becomes confidence. Confidence becomes independence.
At Hawthorn House, we`re not just educating children. We`re walking alongside families, building the foundations for everything that comes next. π
At Hawthorn House, we believe the most powerful thing we can do is create leaders, not just in our staff team, but in the children themselves. β¨
Joy, our eco coordinator, isn`t just teaching sustainability. She`s empowering children to become champions of change within our whole nursery community. When children lead, they learn resilience, confidence, and purpose. They discover they can make a real difference.
Our eco community isn`t a project on the side, it`s woven into everything we do. Children are setting the standard for how we care for our world, and our whole team is following their lead.
That`s what leadership looks like at Hawthorn House. It starts with trust. It grows through action. And it transforms a nursery. π
