From cardboard boxes to architects π¦
Throughout Zero Waste Week, our children turned recycled cardboard into something extraordinary. What started as junk modelling became a lesson in problem-solving, creativity, and confidence.
As they built their houses, they were learning to think spatially, how shapes fit together, which pieces are strong enough to hold weight, what happens when you balance a large box on a smaller one. They were making decisions, testing ideas, and discovering what works. That`s the foundation of mathematical thinking, right there in their hands.
But the real magic? They learned that something destined for the bin could become something brilliant. That`s a lesson that stays with themβand with our planet β¨

Learning happens when children don`t realise they`re learning π
Our children have been busy outside sizing starfish and what looked like play was actually building real, lasting skills. When children measure and compare in the outdoor space, something shifts. There`s no worksheet pressure. There`s just curiosity, discovery, and genuine problem-solving.
Using connector cubes in the sunshine, each child measured their starfish with real purpose, because they genuinely wanted to know: how long is it? They counted confidently, compared their results with friends, and used mathematical language like `longer` and `shorter` naturally, without it feeling like a lesson. That`s the magic of outdoor learning. The environment itself becomes the teacher, and children absorb skills while they`re simply playing and exploring.
Our outdoor spaces, where children can move freely, experiment without limits, and follow their own curiosity, that`s where deep learning happens. Not dressed up as learning. Just woven into what feels like play. And that`s exactly how children learn best.πΏ
