There are many benefits of children playing with playdough including:
๐Ÿ”ด Developing Fine Motor Skills
๐ŸŸ  It is calming for children
๐ŸŸก It encourages creativity
๐ŸŸข It enhances handโ€“eye coordination
๐Ÿ”ต It improves social skills
๐ŸŸฃ It supports Numeracy and literacy

This is why at Mulberry House we value the use of playdough and always have freshly made playdough available to the children in all rooms at all times.
Here at the nursery we make our own playdough, this way we can choose our own, colours fragrances and textures each time as well as being environmentally friendly using all natural and edible ingredients! โ™ป๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ

Did you know that Glitter is made from aluminium and plastic and is classed as a Microplastics which is very problematic for the environment?

Studies have shown that glitter can become airborne and literally come down in the rain, landing in the sea and in the environment!

Today is Earth Day, a day to show your support for protecting the environment, so we thought today would be a great day to tell you that we are no longer using Glitter in any of our Forest House Nurseries! There are many alternatives to glitter which we can use in the nursery so that the children can still enjoy messy play and creative activities!

We are part of the Eco Schools Committee and creating a more eco friendly nursery is a big part if our plans! Removing glitter is just one of the many ways that we are working towards our eco schools award!

When serving food to babies and young children there are several things to consider with certain foods.

Fruit and Vegetables
๐Ÿ‡Small Fruits - ensure to cut all small and especially rounds fruit in to quarters
๐Ÿ‰Large Fruit - cut into slices instead of chunks
๐ŸŽRemove all pips and stones
๐Ÿฅ•Vegetables - cut in to narrow batons, for younger children mashing or grating instead
๐ŸŠRemove the skin from all fruit and vegetables

Meat and Fish
๐ŸŒญSausages - always cut in half length ways, also you can peel off the skin to make them easier to chew and swallow.
๐Ÿ–Remove all bones from meat or fish and cut into strips as thinly as possible. Also you should remove any skin and fat to make it easier to swallow

๐Ÿง€ Grate or cut cheese in to strips rather than chunks

Nuts and Seeds
๐ŸฅœNuts should not be served to children under 5 years old.
When Serving Nuts or Seeds, ensure to grate or chop

๐ŸžIf not chewed properly, white bread can form a ball shape with a dough-like texture in the throat.
Try toasting white bread, or use brown bread instead. Bread, chapatis, naan bread and other breads should be cut into narrow strips.

School Readiness is when a child is ready to make the transition to start school.
This can include children being able to:
๐ŸŽ Use the toilet independently
๐Ÿ Good attention and concentration
๐ŸŽ Good Language and Communication Skill
๐Ÿ Good Socia Skills and Emotional Development

The development of school readiness skills allows school teachers to expand and further develop a childโ€™s skills in the areas of social interaction, play, language, emotional development, physical skills, literacy and fine motor skills. Without these basic skills already established, children can very quickly find themselves playing โ€˜catch upโ€™ compared to their peers that are advancing more quickly.

School Readiness is extremely important to and we take lots of time to support the children in many ways Some of the ways we support this are through:
๐Ÿ– Developing their self care skills including - Toileting, self serve at meal times, dressing and undressing etc
๐Ÿ– Developing their social skills with group activities, Key person time and community links
๐Ÿ– Early Reading - once the children start pre-school they will be given a blue and then red reading book bag. These bags support early reading and phonics with books and activities to take home each week!
๐Ÿ– Daily Routine - this is followed from very early on in the nursery, it develops and becomes much more structured by the time children reach our pre-school room to allow them to be ready for the expectations of a school day!
๐Ÿ– Uniforms - we introduce our polo tops and pump bags to the children from 2 years and over. Although not compulsory it does help to get children ready for wearing school uniforms every day when they transition to school!
๐Ÿ– Independence - we encourage this throughout the day with all of our children, one of the ways this supports school readiness is the introduction of our Water Bottles - children are responsible for bringing these in each day and taking them home each night!
