"Understanding the World provides a powerful, meaningful context for learning across the curriculum. It supports children to make sense of their expanding world and their place within it through nurturing their wonder, curiosity, agency and exploratory drive.
This development requires regular and direct contact with the natural, built and virtual environments around the child and engaging children in collaborative activities which promote inquiry, problem-solving, shared decision making and scientific approaches to understanding the world."

At Sylvan House we encourage the children's independence from a very young age.
This starts with allowing the children to do small and simple tasks by themselves such as feeding and serving themselves.

This is fully supported by our amazing staff team and as children grow and develop their independence grows!

There are many benefits of children playing with playdough including:
🔴 Developing Fine Motor Skills
🟠 It is calming for children
🟡 It encourages creativity
🟢 It enhances hand–eye coordination
🔵 It improves social skills
🟣 It supports Numeracy and literacy

This is why at Sylvan House we value the use of playdough and always have freshly made playdough available to the children in all rooms at all times.
Here at the nursery we make our own playdough, this way we can choose our own, colours fragrances and textures each time as well as being environmentally friendly using all natural and edible ingredients! ♻️🌿

𝔻𝕚𝕕 𝕪𝕠𝕦 𝕜𝕟𝕠𝕨....

Did you know that Glitter is made from aluminium and plastic and is classed as a Microplastics which is very problematic for the environment?

Studies have shown that glitter can become airborne and literally come down in the rain, landing in the sea and in the environment!

Today is Earth Day, a day to show your support for protecting the environment, so we thought today would be a great day to tell you that we are no longer using Glitter in any of our Forest House Nurseries! There are many alternatives to glitter which we can use in the nursery so that the children can still enjoy messy play and creative activities!

We are part of the Eco Schools Committee and creating a more eco friendly nursery is a big part if our plans! Removing glitter is just one of the many ways that we are working towards our eco schools award!

When serving food to babies and young children there are several things to consider with certain foods.

Fruit and Vegetables
🍇Small Fruits - ensure to cut all small and especially rounds fruit in to quarters
🍉Large Fruit - cut into slices instead of chunks
🍎Remove all pips and stones
🥕Vegetables - cut in to narrow batons, for younger children mashing or grating instead
🍊Remove the skin from all fruit and vegetables

Meat and Fish
🌭Sausages - always cut in half length ways, also you can peel off the skin to make them easier to chew and swallow.
🍖Remove all bones from meat or fish and cut into strips as thinly as possible. Also you should remove any skin and fat to make it easier to swallow

Cheese
🧀 Grate or cut cheese in to strips rather than chunks

Nuts and Seeds
🥜Nuts should not be served to children under 5 years old.
When Serving Nuts or Seeds, ensure to grate or chop
first.

Bread
🍞If not chewed properly, white bread can form a ball shape with a dough-like texture in the throat.
Try toasting white bread, or use brown bread instead. Bread, chapatis, naan bread and other breads should be cut into narrow strips.

🎒📝📚What is 𝒮𝒸𝒽𝑜𝑜𝓁 𝑅𝑒𝒶𝒹𝒾𝓃𝑒𝓈𝓈? 📚📝🎒

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻?
School Readiness is when a child is ready to make the transition to start school.
This can include children being able to:
🍎 Use the toilet independently
🍏 Good attention and concentration
🍎 Good Language and Communication Skill
🍏 Good Socia Skills and Emotional Development

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁?
The development of school readiness skills allows school teachers to expand and further develop a child’s skills in the areas of social interaction, play, language, emotional development, physical skills, literacy and fine motor skills. Without these basic skills already established, children can very quickly find themselves playing ‘catch up’ compared to their peers that are advancing more quickly.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀:
School Readiness is extremely important to and we take lots of time to support the children in many ways Some of the ways we support this are through:
🖍 Developing their self care skills including - Toileting, self serve at meal times, dressing and undressing etc
🖍 Developing their social skills with group activities, Key person time and community links
🖍 Early Reading - once the children start pre-school they will be given a blue and then red reading book bag. These bags support early reading and phonics with books and activities to take home each week!
🖍 Daily Routine - this is followed from very early on in the nursery, it develops and becomes much more structured by the time children reach our pre-school room to allow them to be ready for the expectations of a school day!
🖍 Uniforms - we introduce our polo tops and pump bags to the children from 2 years and over. Although not compulsory it does help to get children ready for wearing school uniforms every day when they transition to school!
🖍 Independence - we encourage this throughout the day with all of our children, one of the ways this supports school readiness is the introduction of our Water Bottles - children are responsible for bringing these in each day and taking them home each night!
